Team Somerset 500 Club – Funding Excellence

The Team Somerset 500 Club fund was set upto help young people overcome barriers to achieving their sporting potential.

Applicants must be aged 25 or younger. You should have reached at least county level (or equivalent) in your sport, and would need financial assistance to reach a higher level.

You can apply for up to 80% of your costs per year for any costs associated with developing your sporting potential, for example equipment purchases, competition fees and travel expenses.

Sophie Burr, from Somerset, is 15 years old and she's been the British trampolining champion in her age group for the last three years.

While Sophie does not receive any financial support from her sport's governing body, she is benefiting from a scheme set up by the chairman of Somerset County Council.

Inspired by the 2012 Games, Councillor Alan Gloak is spearheading the "Team Somerset 500 Club" to support young talent from Somerset.

The scheme aims to find 500 local businesses that will pay £500 a year to nurture local athletes and help them to achieve their full potential.

Alan's ambition is to see at least one Somerset athlete on the podium with a gold medal. Successful Olympian, Mark Foster is impressed: he thinks that Sophie may not have received this vital help if the Games had not captured Alan's imagination.
